Have you ever seen a grizzly bear? Seeing one of these formidable creatures is a surprising experience. Really, it’s shocking how an animal that looks so cuddly is so ferocious. Everything is not as it seems in nature, and that’s a part of the natural world’s wildness. This August, accept that it’s OK to be a little wild! Howl with your friends, climb beyond your limitations, roar wild and free, and be wild and wonderful! There’s something untamed hidden within your heart, and so feel free to unleash it just a bit. How do you experience your own wildness? Next time you see something wild and wonderful, use #wowisaw to tell us about it!
The best places to get in touch with your wild side are in the most preserved natural areas in America. The National Parks celebrate their centennial this month! On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson founded the National Park Service. Another President, Theodore Roosevelt, one of the Park Services’ biggest advocates, said that “there is nothing so American as our national parks…The fundamental idea behind the parks… is that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us.” Throw the National Park Service a wild party in celebration of their centennial by opening yourself up to the wildness of these places that beckons to us all.
Get some Advice from a Bear, and take a good long nap!
Even a bear needs to take a break sometimes, and so don’t let your wildness stop you from your much needed snooze. Did you know that bears, some of the most feared and respected creatures in the wild, hibernate for up to 7 and a-half months? That’s over half the year! While you certainly don’t need that much sleep, you still need some. Not sleeping enough compromises your energy levels, and brings down your wildness! Don't miss the Perseid Meteor Shower this August 9-13th! The greatest bursts are expected to take place Aug 11-12 between 1am and 5am. Stay up late to be amazed then take a nap the next day.
Be like a Moose and hold your head up high!
It’s easy to feel tamed in today’s society. But who says you can’t be wildly confident? Part of your wildness is an inner assurance that, yes, you are magnificent. Just make sure to keep your nose clean of pride, because no one else needs to be told that you’re amazing. You just are.
Follow in the Wolf’s paw prints and pack life with good memories!
When do you feel wild? Is it when you explore a new landscape? Perhaps it’s when you climb a mountain, or maybe a concrete jungle. Play just as hard as you work. Make up your own games when there are none, and be the only one smiling when no one else is. There is no reason not to enjoy your life. What is hardly ever mentioned is that having fun takes some bravery. It’s hard to make the first joke, to introduce yourself, to be the first one dancing. But putting yourself out there often leads to the best memories.
Feel Free to Be You
Mimic a Wildflower and open up!
Every flower on a mountainside is different, and you are different from every other person who has ever lived. Show your true colors, because if you don’t no one will know how exciting you can be! This, too, takes a willingness to be you. Part of your wildness is your individuality, and so work hard to honor the simple things in your being that are just yours.
“We need the tonic of wildness…At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.”
- Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods.
